BSRIA report finds trends in global restroom market
By Brianna Crandall, October 5, 2015—For facilities managers interested in trends in restroom furnishings, particularly for an upcoming renovation, the U.K.-based nonprofit BSRIA (owned by The Building Services Research and Information Association) has launched its findings of the Global Bathroom Market (2015) as part of its World Multi-Client Study.
The key finding was that the global baths market is just over 24 million units sold in 2014 and is predicted to grow at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of just below 5% until 2019. The 2014 total shower trays market is just under 20 million units, estimated to grow by a CAGR of over 9% in the next five years. As space is more and more at a premium, the report found evidence that customers are switching their attention from baths to shower trays and "walk-in" showers.
Just below 400 million units of ceramic sanitary ware were sold in 2014, expected to grow at a CAGR of 7%-8% in the next five years. Sales of concealed and exposed plastic cisterns hover in the region of 20 million units globally, with concealed models set to take over share from exposed models.
Around 430 million taps and mixers / faucets were sold in 2014, estimated to grow by 6%-7% annually until 2019.
Zoltan Karpathy, senior manager BSRIA WMI, commented, "There is a growing desire by home / building owners to renovate and improve bathrooms, so in the context of sluggish new construction activity across several markets, refurbishment / retrofit is the main end-use segment. Innovations such as silent flushing systems and clog-free WCs are catching people's attention, but low water consumption, easy installation and improved quality are important decision-making factors."
EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) accounts for over 62% of the world baths market in volume, followed by Asia-Pacific (around 22%) and Americas (around 16%). In the shower trays segment, sales to EMEA accounted for around half of all commercialized units; the Americas have over 41% global share in the ceramic sanitary ware market; and the Asia-Pacific market accounted for almost 34%. In the taps and mixers segment, Asia Pacific is the largest market (mainly one-hand mixers), accounting for around 43% of global sales. This is followed by EMEA (over 34%) and the Americas (23%).
The report provides insights on market opportunities for bathroom / sanitary products, and gives the market size (2014) and trends (2011-2019) for baths (cast iron, steel and plastic / acrylic), shower trays (ceramic, steel and plastic / acrylic), ceramic sanitary ware, plastic cisterns (exposed and concealed), and for taps and mixers / faucets.
The study forms part of BSRIA's Global Overview Analysis (GOA) type reports. The Bathroom GOA study was published in May 2015 and provides market data for the Americas (USA, Brazil, Mexico, Rest of Americas), EMEA (France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, Turkey, U.K. and rest of EMEA), as well as Asia Pacific (Australia, China, India, Indonesia and rest of Asia Pacific).
